Better Graphics Calls for More Power
As demand for graphics capabilities keep increasing, standards have been updated to accommodate modern, power-hungry graphics cards. ATX 3.0 and PCIe 5.0 include a new connector called a 12VHPWR, which stands for 12 Volt High Power. Where the older 8-pin PCIe connector is rated up to only 150W—which meant using up to three connectors to power a high-end card—the new 16-pin connector is capable of up to 600W of power. It was designed with next-generation graphics cards in mind.
The New 12VHPWR Connector
The new 12VHPWR connector replaces multiple cables on a power supply with a single one. This makes it simpler to install and, together with the more compact 30mm pin spacing, it allows for more air flow. Being keyed differently also eliminates the common mistake of trying to connect a 12V EPS connector into a PCIe 6+2-pin socket.
Depending on the power supply, the 12 power pins on the connector can be configured to provide 150W, 300W, 450W, or 600W of power. The other 4 pins are for communications signals, such as the maximum power available through the connector.
